We Planned Our Entire Taiwan Trip Inside an AI Brain. Here's What It Means for Your Tour Business.

The Permit That Almost Sank the Trip
Eight days before Sarah and I flew to Taiwan, the local police emailed us in Mandarin. It was a rejection of our mountain hut permit application, and neither of us could read a word of it.
We pasted the letter into the AI brain we had built inside Claude Cowork. It read the rejection, pulled up our project notes on the trip, and understood the problem in about ten seconds. It drafted a reply in Mandarin, and the application was fixed and approved that same morning.

That fix was one small piece of a much bigger experiment. Sarah and I planned our entire 12-day trip to Taiwan almost entirely inside Claude Cowork, and we want to walk you through what it was like: what the AI was scary good at, where it went sideways, and the one instruction we now use on every project because of what happened on this trip.
This isn’t a travel story for its own sake. Every part of it comes back to one question that matters for your business: what does this mean for how you position, market, and sell your tours?
Why We Built an AI Brain Instead of Chatting
If you’ve followed this series, you know we’ve spent months building what we call an AI brain inside Claude Cowork: a set of markdown text files that hold our preferences, our project details, our history, and our context. We opened that same brain up for this trip. Every flight, every confirmed hotel, every preference, every to-do list item lived in there and evolved as we went. This is different from planning inside a browser tab or bouncing questions back and forth in a chat window. Working inside a tool like Claude Cowork meant we could manipulate files, generate documents, and run multiple tasks at once, all from one place.
The Itinerary that Survived Seven Rewrites
The master itinerary we built went through seven versions. Not because the AI kept getting it wrong, but because we kept changing our minds. When we compressed one leg of the trip from three days down to two, the AI rippled that change across trains, hotels, and luggage logistics in a single pass.

That kind of cascading update is exactly what’s painful to do by hand in a spreadsheet or across nine browser tabs. We also asked it to turn the itinerary into a visual timeline we could host online and send to family, which caught a problem we’d missed in the text version: a hotel we loved for its hot springs turned out to be twenty minutes outside of town, nowhere near the beach walk we wanted.
Where It Got Things Right
The AI navigated complicated local logistics without much hand-holding. Taiwan’s high mountain hut permits involve police bureaus, foreign policy checks, and a lottery system for non-residents. The AI read every reply, drafted our responses, and helped us clear hoops that would normally mean working through a local operator.
It did the same for transportation. Taipei’s subway, the Ubike share system, high-speed rail, and local buses all have their own booking quirks. The AI pulled real-time timetables, walked us through the booking process, and pointed us to the app for our train tickets. When our plans shifted, it adjusted the timing and transit options automatically.
It also helped us sort through a pile of competing recommendations, from Guest Focus community members, friends, colleagues, and even a list of Jensen Huang’s favorite Taipei restaurants. Every tip either landed on a specific day of the trip or got cut, with a reason attached.
Where It Went Sideways
It wasn’t perfect. Around version four, the AI swapped out a town we cared about while reorganizing part of the trip, and we didn’t catch it right away. The lesson: if part of your plan is non-negotiable, say so explicitly and lock it in before you let the AI reorganize around it.

It also leaned into urgency more than we needed. We got warnings that a hike might sell out, that we’d missed a lottery window, that we needed to book something immediately. Some of that was accurate. A lot of it was noise that added stress to a part of the process that should have been fun.
The Instruction We Now Use on Every Project
That urgency problem led to the one change we’ve kept for every project since. We told our AI to push back on us, to challenge our assumptions, and to tell us when we were wrong. It shifted from an assistant that agreed with everything we suggested to a sharp co-planner. When we proposed cramming a twelve-kilometer hike and a five-hour transfer into the same day, it told us plainly we’d hate it. It was right.
The line now lives permanently in our AI instructions:
“Be my ruthless mentor. Challenge my assumptions. Stress test everything. I need bulletproof thinking, not validation.”
A word of warning: Sarah didn’t love this one. A ruthless mentor can wear on you if you’re not used to being challenged on every idea. If the word “ruthless” feels like too much, soften it. The point is the pushback, not the tone.
Three Shifts Changing How Your Guests Will Find You
Planning this trip as travelers, not tour operators, taught us more about where guest behavior is heading than any conference session we’ve sat through this year. Three shifts stood out.
First, this is generational. A 2026 Simon-Kucher travel trend study found more than 60 percent of Gen Z and millennial travelers now use AI tools for travel inspiration and planning. Your tour is being compared inside a chat window now, not across ten open browser tabs.
Second, quotable is the new page one. If your tour sales page reads like a brochure, AI has nothing to work with. If it plainly answers what real travelers are asking, states who the tour is for and who it isn’t, spells out what’s included, and explains cancellation policies and physical demands in plain language, you become the kind of source a large language model can quote. Your existing SEO work isn’t wasted, it’s the foundation this next layer sits on. Some people call this next layer generative engine optimization, or GEO.

Third, the booking pipes are being connected. TripAdvisor and Viator now have official integrations with AI assistants, and the distance between planning a trip and booking it is collapsing fast. We’re not yet comfortable handing AI our credit card, but that convenience is coming fast.
What To Do This Week
Three things, each one designed to hand you something usable.
Become your own guest. Open an AI assistant and ask it to plan a day in your city the way your ideal guest would ask, with real details about mobility, allergies, and preferences. Notice whether you and your competitors show up.
Ask the same tool to describe the perfect version of your tour in a traveler’s own words. These models have absorbed enormous amounts of forum posts and reviews, so they often surface language and questions you haven’t put on your website yet.
Paste your tour description into that same thread and ask it to assess what’s readable and quotable. Get it to flag gaps in your FAQ or places your policies could be clearer.
We didn’t need to fly to Taiwan to learn this, and neither do you. Plan a scouting trip, a family visit, even a weekend in a neighboring city, and pay attention to how AI shapes the experience from the traveler’s side. It will tell you more about where your guests are headed than any report will.
